Bao Dai Palace 1, Da Lat
Going along Trần Hưng Đạo Street up to Trại Hầm T-Junction then straight up Trần Quang Diệu Street, tourists will reach The First Palace. After being brought back to the throne under French custody, King Bảo Đại established it as his ‘Kingdom’s Territory’ and used it as the head quarters for officials in his ‘Territory’. Located six kilometers northeast of Đả Lạt Center, on o poetic dreamy hill of 1550m meters high surrounded by pone forests. The First Palace is such an extraordinary architectural work with ancient, majestic and refined appearance that once visiting it, nobody can help uttering comments of praise and admiration. Originally it was residence of a French official, Robert Clément Bourgery. In August 1949, because of its beautiful and quiet location, Head of State Bảo Đại bought it and then had it repaired and redecorated. On building it, people discovered a hidden underground tunnel but Bảo Đại had it kept a secret. This 4 km tunnel is at the back of The First Palace and joins with The Second. It has side branches up into villas 11, 16, 18 and 26 on Trần Hưng Đạo Street. Before overthrowing the French rule, Japanese had dug it so as to capture French officers in Governor General’s Palace and surrounding villas.
